Confronting and Challenging the Gavel Gap: Lessons from Ohio
Please join Bricker & Eckler, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Central Ohio, the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association and the American Constitution Society for a discussion of "The Gavel Gap,” the label used to describe the differences between the race and gender composition of state courts and the communities they serve.
The first panel will provide attendees with tools and strategies for running for elected office. Panelists will discuss registering as a candidate, seeking party endorsements, fundraising, campaigning, ethical constraints and election tools that are available locally.
The second panel session, featuring Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, Judge Laurel Beatty Blunt and Judge Marie Hoover, will focus on how disparities in representation can impact the justice system. The panelists will also offer insights, based on their experience, on why they believe the Gavel Gap exists and how lawyers can help change it.
Both panel sessions will be moderated by Aftab Pureval, the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts.
The second panel discussion has been submitted to the Supreme Court of Ohio Commission on Continuing Legal Education for 1.00 hour of CLE credit. Approval is pending.
CLE will take place at Bricker & Eckler (100 S. Third Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215) and registration begins at 2:45PM.
