2017 Candidate Meet and Greet

Please join us at the 2017 Candidate Meet and Greet on October 11, 2017 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, at the Offices of the Columbus Bar Association, 175 S. Third Street, 11th Floor, Columbus, Ohio 43215

As with the prior three years, this year’s event will be jointly hosted by the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, the Women Lawyers of Franklin County, the Hispanic National Bar Association–Region X, and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Central Ohio.

The format of the event will be casual with mingling for the first half hour. We will then give each candidate three minutes to address the audience beginning at 6:00 p.m. After all speakers have concluded, there will be more opportunity to mingle with members.

Admission is free and appeteizers, beer and wine will be served.

The Eleventh Annual Gala

Each year APABA-CO hosts a Gala as a fundraising and awareness event at which we include speakers and cultural experiences in furtherance of our mission. Our annual gala is also a celebration of APABA-CO’s achievements and activities throughout the year. The Eleventh Annual Gala will take place on Friday, September 8, 2017.

Confronting and Challenging the Gavel Gap: Lessons from Ohio

Confronting and Challenging the Gavel Gap: Lessons from Ohio Please join Bricker & Eckler, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Central Ohio, the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association and the American Constitution Society for a discussion of "The Gavel Gap,” the label used to describe the differences between the race and gender composition of state courts and the communities they serve.

The first panel will provide attendees with tools and strategies for running for elected office. Panelists will discuss registering as a candidate, seeking party endorsements, fundraising, campaigning, ethical constraints and election tools that are available locally.

The second panel session, featuring Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, Judge Laurel Beatty Blunt and Judge Marie Hoover, will focus on how disparities in representation can impact the justice system. The panelists will also offer insights, based on their experience, on why they believe the Gavel Gap exists and how lawyers can help change it.

Both panel sessions will be moderated by Aftab Pureval, the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts.

The second panel discussion has been submitted to the Supreme Court of Ohio Commission on Continuing Legal Education for 1.00 hour of CLE credit. Approval is pending.

CLE will take place at Bricker & Eckler (100 S. Third Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215) and registration begins at 2:45PM.

APABA-CO Annual Family Picnic

AAPI Heritage Month CLE + Networking Lunch

The month of May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. During May, institutions are encouraged to celebrate the culture, traditions and history of the AAPI Community.

APABA-CO cordially invites you to a CLE and networking lunch celebrating AAPI Heritage Month from 8:30 am to 1:15 pm. The Legal Aid Society of Columbus and speakers Emily Dunlap and Inna Simakovsky will present a free CLE, “Representing Pro Bono Clients in T and U Visa Applications.

According to a 2016 Columbus Dispatch article, out of the 203 human trafficking cases in Franklin County in 2015, 22% of the victims identified as Asian. This CLE (4.5 general hours, pending approval) will provide legal and non-legal training for volunteer lawyers who wish to provide pro bono assistance for T and U Visa Applicants.

Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. A light breakfast and coffee will be provided at the start of the program. We will also be serving a traditional Indian lunch catered by Amul India.

APABA-CO Spring Happy Hour

Please join APABA-CO for a March Madness happy hour at the El Arepazo, Brewery District, 515 S High St, Columbus, Ohio 43215 on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. We will also be collecting clean and gently used professional clothing for foster youth for the 6th Annual OSBF Suits for Success Drive (please see attached flier: Flyer, OSBA HQ- May 2017.pdf)

Metered parking is available around El Arepazo and free parking is available in the rear lot of the restaurant after 5:30 p.m. APABA-CO will provide appetizers and drinks.

Join Ice Miller for a CLE and Celebration of Asian American Heritage Month

Ice Miller will present a CLE entitled: Asian American Litigants in US History. The CLE (1.0 general hours, pending approval) will cover landmark cases and their impact on the US including: Yick Wo v. Hopkins, United States v. Wong Kim Ark, and Korematsu v. United States.
